Enable payment methods: Swish, Klarna, MB WAY or Apple Pay not showing at checkout
13 min read
You switched on Swish, Klarna, MB WAY or another payment method in Stripe — and your customers still only see a card form. The answer is almost always one of two things:
- Payment methods are switched on and off in your own Stripe account, not in Rentalbuddy. There is no list of payment methods anywhere in the Rentalbuddy admin, and Rentalbuddy does not lock or choose methods for you.
- The Payment option setting in Rentalbuddy decides where the customer pays. With In the booking window, the customer pays inside the booking window on your website, and methods that need to send the customer to another app or page — Swish, Klarna, MB WAY and similar — are not offered. Switch to On Stripe's payment page and they can appear.
One thing never to do: switch card payments off in Stripe. See the section on keeping cards on below.
For the full split of what is done in Rentalbuddy and what in Stripe, see the guide on Rentalbuddy and Stripe.
Step 1: turn the method on in your Stripe account
When a customer reaches the payment step, Rentalbuddy asks Stripe for a checkout without naming any payment methods. Stripe then offers whatever is switched on in the payment method settings of your own Stripe account — the one connected under Settings → Payments — filtered by what Stripe supports for your country, your currency, the amount and the customer's device.
So the first stop is always your Stripe Dashboard:
- Log in to Stripe with the account that is connected to Rentalbuddy, in live mode (not test mode).
- Open Stripe's payment method settings.
- Turn the method on. Stripe may ask you to accept extra terms for some methods.
If Stripe will not let you turn a method on, it is not available for your account's country or currency, and there is nothing to change in Rentalbuddy. Which methods exist, and their rules (for example that Swish is for Swedish kronor and MB WAY for euro), are Stripe's and the method providers' — check Stripe's own documentation for the method.
TWINT only appears for accounts that charge in Swiss francs. If Switzerland is your market, set Currency to CHF on the Payments tab; with any other currency Stripe never offers TWINT, whatever you switch on. Like Swish, it also needs On Stripe's payment page (step 2).
Step 2: set Payment option to On Stripe's payment page for Swish, Klarna and MB WAY
This is the setting operators miss.
- Open Settings in the menu and go to the Payments tab.
- In the Checkout settings card, find Payment option. It has two choices:
- In the booking window (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay)
- On Stripe's payment page (cards, plus Swish, Klarna, MB WAY and other local methods)
- Choose On Stripe's payment page if you want Swish, Klarna, MB WAY or similar methods.
- Press Save.
You can change this yourself — older advice that support has to switch it for you is out of date. The Payments tab is shown to users who can manage settings (account owners and members, and partner owners and partner members working in a customer's account).
What the two choices mean for the customer
In the booking window — the customer pays inside the booking window on your own website, without leaving it. A countdown labelled Finish in: shows how long the equipment is held for them. The payment form is set up never to send the customer away, so Stripe leaves out every method that works by sending the customer to another app or page — Swish, Klarna, MB WAY, MobilePay, PayPal and similar — even when they are switched on in Stripe. Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay work here.
On Stripe's payment page — when the customer continues to payment, their browser leaves your website and opens a separate payment page. From there Stripe can send them to Klarna, their bank, the Swish or MB WAY app and back. When the payment is done they are sent back to your booking page and see their confirmation. Cards are offered on that page too, so you do not lose card payments by switching.
If you enabled Swish, Klarna or MB WAY in Stripe and customers only see card, switch Payment option to On Stripe's payment page. That one change resolves most of these cases.
Things to know about Payment option
- It applies to the whole account. Every location uses the same setting; you cannot pay in the booking window at one location and on Stripe's payment page at another.
- It applies to every online payment, not only new bookings: customers extending a booking, moving to a time that costs more, and paying a payment link you sent from a booking all pay the same way.
- The same time limit applies either way. When the customer continues to payment, the equipment is held for them for about seven minutes, whether they pay in the booking window or on Stripe's payment page. What happens when that runs out is in the guide on failed payments. If Stripe refuses the payment before it starts (no payment method to offer, or a total below Stripe's smallest payment), the equipment is released at once.
- Under the field there is a reminder about cards. While Stripe payments are on, the help text reads "Keep card payments enabled in Stripe. Cards are the only method every customer can use, and the only one shown in the booking window."
- It is greyed out when Stripe payments are off. If Disable Stripe Payments is switched on, the help text instead reads "Payment option only applies when Stripe payments are enabled."
Keep card payments switched on in Stripe
Some operators switch cards off in Stripe to offer "Swish only". Do not: it stops every payment.
- With In the booking window, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are the only methods that can ever be shown. With cards off, Stripe has nothing to offer. Instead of the payment form, the customer sees "Online payment is not available right now. Please contact the location to complete your booking.", and the equipment they picked is released at once.
- With On Stripe's payment page, Swish only works for customers with a Swedish bank account and BankID, so anyone else could not pay at all.
The same message appears when none of the methods you switched on takes your currency, and it also stops customers who extend a booking, move it to a time that costs more, or pay the rest of a booking on their unlock page.
If this has happened, Rentalbuddy tells you. As soon as a customer is turned away, a red notice appears on the dashboard (Home) and on the Payments tab, which also gets a mark: "A customer could not pay on …: no payment method is enabled in Stripe. Turn card payments back on under Settings → Payment methods in Stripe.", with the date of the last refused payment and an Open Stripe button that takes you to Stripe's payment method settings. The notice stays until a customer's payment goes through again, and it is hidden while Disable Stripe Payments is on.
Turn cards back on in Stripe. If you want Swish beside cards, choose On Stripe's payment page as well.
Disable Stripe Payments must be off
On the same card there is a Disable Stripe Payments switch. Its description reads: "When Stripe payments are disabled, customers can complete bookings without paying online at checkout (typically unpaid or pay on site)." With it on there is no online payment step at all, so no payment methods appear for anyone. Make sure it is off if you want customers to pay online. What the switch does at self-service locations is covered in the guide on connecting Stripe.
Apple Pay and Google Pay
Apple Pay and Google Pay are wallet buttons that Stripe shows only when the customer's device can use them:
- Apple Pay appears on Apple devices in Safari when the customer has a card in Apple Wallet.
- Google Pay appears in browsers where the customer has Google Pay set up.
So "I don't see Apple Pay" when you test on a Windows laptop is expected. Test on an iPhone in Safari instead. Wallets work with In the booking window — that choice explicitly lists cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay — so you do not need Stripe's payment page for them.
Apple Pay and your website's domain
In the booking window, Apple Pay only shows on web addresses that are registered as payment method domains in your Stripe account. Rentalbuddy registers them for you, so you don't have to add anything in Stripe:
- Which domains: Rentalbuddy's own booking pages, and the website address of each location, from the field URL where book button is implemented on the location's Book button tab. A bare domain such as example.com also gets its www. form.
- When: as soon as you connect Stripe, whenever a new website address is saved, and every night for everything else.
- Only ever added: Rentalbuddy never removes a domain. A domain you have switched off in Stripe is left switched off.
If Apple Pay appears on Rentalbuddy's booking page but not on your own website:
- Check that URL where book button is implemented on the location's Book button tab is the address of the page where the booking button really is, and save it if it was wrong.
- In Stripe, check the payment method domains: your website's domain should be listed and switched on. If you switched it off, only you can switch it on again.
- Test again on an iPhone in Safari with a card in Apple Wallet. A newly saved address is registered right away, or at the latest during the night.
If the wallets are switched on in Stripe and still never appear on a device that should support them, the remaining checks are on Stripe's side — Stripe's payment method settings page usually says why a method is not offered. Other wallets such as Samsung Pay follow Stripe's rules in the same way; whether Stripe offers them for your account is shown in your Stripe payment method settings.
PayPal, MobilePay and other methods
Any extra method is switched on in Stripe, not in Rentalbuddy. PayPal and MobilePay, where Stripe offers them for your country, send the customer to their own app or page to approve the payment — so, like Klarna, they need Payment option set to On Stripe's payment page.
MB WAY (Portugal) is one of these Stripe methods and follows the same rules: switch it on in your Stripe account, charge in euro, and choose On Stripe's payment page. There is no separate MB WAY setting in Rentalbuddy. Customers can also book in Portuguese (see the customer flow guide for booking languages).
Only methods that are paid at checkout work for bookings. Rentalbuddy confirms a booking when Stripe reports the payment as paid at the end of checkout. Methods where the money is confirmed later — such as direct debits or bank transfers that take days to clear — do not confirm the booking: it expires after the hold and the customer gets no booking. Leave such methods switched off for your Rentalbuddy bookings.
What is "Link"?
Some customers see a Link option, or notice their card details being remembered. Link is Stripe's own one-click payment feature: it saves the customer's details with Stripe (not with Rentalbuddy or with you) so they can pay faster next time anywhere Link is accepted.
There is no Rentalbuddy setting for it. To turn Link off or on, use the payment method settings in your Stripe account.
Checklist: the payment method still doesn't show
Work through these in order:
- Is it switched on in Stripe? Check the payment method settings of the Stripe account connected to Rentalbuddy, in live mode.
- Does it send the customer to another app or page? Swish, Klarna, MB WAY, MobilePay, PayPal and similar need Payment option set to On Stripe's payment page in Settings → Payments. Press Save after changing it.
- Are cards still on in Stripe? With cards off, the booking window has nothing to show and customers are turned away.
- Is Disable Stripe Payments off? With it on, no online payment methods appear at all.
- Does the method support your currency and country? Stripe filters methods by both. Your Currency is shown on the same Payments tab. TWINT, for example, only appears when the currency is Swiss francs.
- Does the method support this amount? Some methods have minimum or maximum amounts set by the method provider, and Stripe hides the method outside that range. Below Stripe's smallest online payment for your currency (shown on the Payments tab), no method can be used at all and the customer is told the amount is too small to pay online.
- For wallets: right device, right browser? Apple Pay needs Safari on an Apple device with a card in Wallet; Google Pay needs a browser with Google Pay set up. For Apple Pay on your own website, the location's URL where book button is implemented must be the page the booking button is on, and that domain must not be switched off in Stripe's payment method domains.
- Test with a real booking on your own website, all the way to the payment step, on the kind of phone your customers use. That is the only view that shows exactly what your customers see.
If everything above checks out and the method still does not appear, the restriction is in Stripe's rules for that method — Stripe's payment method settings usually state the reason next to the method. If a method that used to work suddenly fails for everyone (for example Klarna), check Stripe's status page for an outage.
Common questions
I have Swish and Klarna enabled in Stripe, but they don't show when customers pay. Why? Your Payment option is most likely In the booking window, which hides methods that send the customer to another app. Go to Settings → Payments, choose On Stripe's payment page and press Save.
Customers see "Online payment is not available right now. Please contact the location to complete your booking." Stripe had no payment method to offer: card payments are switched off in your Stripe account, or no enabled method takes your currency. Turn cards back on in Stripe's payment method settings (Open Stripe on the red notice takes you there).
Can I offer only Swish and switch cards off? No. With cards off there is nothing left to show in the booking window, customers get "Online payment is not available right now…" instead of the payment form, and a red notice appears in Rentalbuddy. Swish also only works for customers with a Swedish bank and BankID. Keep cards on and choose On Stripe's payment page so Swish appears beside them.
Has Rentalbuddy locked my payment methods in Stripe? No. Your Stripe account is your own, and Rentalbuddy does not choose methods for you. Methods are switched on in your Stripe Dashboard; Rentalbuddy only decides between In the booking window and On Stripe's payment page.
How do I add Swish as a payment method? Switch Swish on in your Stripe account's payment method settings, then set Payment option to On Stripe's payment page in Settings → Payments.
Can customers in Portugal pay with MB WAY? Yes, if MB WAY is switched on in your Stripe account, you charge in euro and Payment option is On Stripe's payment page. It works like Swish or Klarna.
TWINT isn't working — customers only see card. TWINT needs two things: your Currency set to CHF, and Payment option set to On Stripe's payment page. If both are right and it worked before, check Stripe's status page and your Stripe payment method settings.
Apple Pay doesn't show up on my iPhone. Apple Pay needs Safari with a card in Apple Wallet, and Apple Pay switched on in Stripe. It works with In the booking window; you do not need Stripe's payment page for it. On your own website, also check that the location's URL where book button is implemented is right and that the domain isn't switched off in Stripe.
Do I have to register my website's domain in Stripe for Apple Pay? No. Rentalbuddy registers its booking pages and each location's website address in your Stripe account when you connect Stripe, when a new address is saved, and every night. It only adds domains; one you switched off in Stripe stays off.
I switched a domain off in Stripe. Will Rentalbuddy switch it back on? No. Rentalbuddy only adds missing domains and leaves a switched-off domain as it is. Switch it on again in Stripe if Apple Pay should work there.
Can I choose which payment methods to offer somewhere in Rentalbuddy? No. Switch methods on and off in Stripe. Rentalbuddy controls only Payment option and the Disable Stripe Payments switch.
Can different locations offer different payment methods? No. The Stripe connection and Payment option are set once for the whole account, so all locations offer the same methods.
Do I lose card payments if I switch to Stripe's payment page? No. Cards are offered on that page too. The difference is that customers leave your website to pay on a separate page and are then sent back.
